I remember getting this recipe off the radio when I was about 13 years old. They were trying to make it live on air and I think everything ended up covered in chocolate. I know when I tried to make it, that’s what happened!
I’ve only made this the once. It was a big success but was far too rich and sweet for me. I can’t fully remember what I did with the frosting in terms of thickening it up (or not).
Death by Chocolate
I think it’s safe to assume this has more calories in it than a highly calorific thing on a binge-spree!
For the Cake
- 4 oz Butter
- 8 oz Brown sugar
- 2 medium Eggs
- 0.25 pt Sour cream
- 6 oz Plain flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 0.5 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
- 2 oz Cocoa
For the Filling
- 2 tbsp Cocoa
- 2 tbsp Hot water
- 4 oz Butter
- 5 oz Icing Sugar
- vanilla escence
For the Frosting
- 8 oz Dark chocolate
- 2 tbsp Cocoa
- 2 tbsp Hot water
- 0.25 pt Double cream
Cake
- Cream butter and sugar
- Beat in the eggs
- Add the sour cream and mix well
- Sieve in the remainder of the dry ingredients for the cake and fold in
- Divide mixture between two 8″ trays and bake at gas mark 5 for 30-35 minutes
Filing
- Mix water and cocoa and vanilla essence
- Cream the butter and icing sugar until fluffy
Assembly
- When cake is cold, cut both parts horizontally to create 4 halve
- Stick these together with the filling mix
Frosting
- Melt the dark chocolate slowly over water
- Mix together the cocoa and water and add this to the melted chocolate and allow to cool
- Mix in the double cream
- Spread the frosting over the cake
To serve
- Cut into slices and warm in microwave for 15 seconds. Serve with cream or ice-cream.
